ProtoMix1 is the codename for EGR Software's first in house USB enabled spatial mixer prototype.
Usage: ProtoMix1 is not a final design that is representative of any product. It is an in house development prototype of a USB enabled spatial mixer that allows mouse/keyboard free control of software created with Typhon and Scream. Some of this software will be DJ related and allows control of spatial projection of audio on any horizontal based sound system; features include spatial scratching. Unlike Final Scratch, Ms. Pinky and other digital DJ queue based tools all audio is mixed and processed on the computer and not by an actual physical audio based DJ mixer. ProtoMix1 replaces the DJ mixer in the traditional digital queuing system.
ProtoMix1 also controls AmbiPan up to any number of virtual channels. Left/Right channel selection/slide buttons are conveniently positioned in the lower right hand corner.
Benefits: There are several benefits to creating a USB enabled controller over MIDI based control. The 1st being that the USB controller is pollable and works well with real time systems over the event based MIDI system supported by Java. The second major benefit is that ProtoMix1 works with a 10bit A/D for sensors. This increased bit depth enables faders/knobs to give results between 0 and 1000. This increase greatly improves precision manipulation of software parameters compared to 7bit MIDI CC data.
ProtoMix1 was hand made with simple tools (dremel, drill, file) and Phidgets. Any production prototypes or final release will be professionally machined.
In the future an API suite that integrates Phidgets with Typhon will be available from EGR Software.
